To Kill a Mockingbird

My Goodreads account will show that I’ve read this book twice, when in actuality, it is more like 15 or 16 times. I read it in high school for the first time, then again in college as a part of a class. As a teacher, I read it out loud to 5 different classes the year I taught freshmen. I’ve read it at least twice just for me. Then over the last two school years I taught it again, in 5 different classes, although we didn’t read it out loud this time.

My copy is getting a little worn, and I should probably buy a new one, but I have this habit. When I really love a book, I have to underline my favorite passages, write little notes.

This particular copy has been with me since I taught freshmen, so there are lots of little notes and underlines, and I find that I discover something new each time I read. I will also write in questions that I want to make sure my students notice as little things can sometimes fly over their heads.

I really don’t think I can review this book and give any insights beyond what is already out there. It is definitely my favorite book, and Atticus is my favorite literary character ever (and don’t ruin him for me by talking about Go Set a Watchman; I haven’t read it, and I don’t plan to). He is full of wisdom and love for his children. And, Gregory Peck is just gorgeous in the movie, so that’s a good visual to have while reading.

For now, I’m going to shelve my copy, but this book is rarely far from my mind.
